08.09.2014 FLI_Workshop - Systems Biology of Ageing
Workshop - Systems Biology of Ageing
Jena, Germany September 8-9, 2014

The continuing increase in life expectancy poses demanding challenges to society in general and public health systems in particular. Promotion of health in old age requires intensive research efforts into ageing processes and age-related diseases. It is now being increasingly recognised that a reductionist approach ascribing ageing phenomena to single causes is inadequate to explain all functional changes associated with ageing. Therefore strategies suited to study complex stochastic systems are required.

In recent years, a multidisciplinary approach known as systems biology has emerged that analyses the interactions between the components of biological systems in a systems-wide way. We expect that age research will greatly benefit from such a systems biology perspective.

The workshop will bring together bench scientists and modellers interested in systems biology of ageing.

We invite researchers to present new original research adopting systems biology approaches to ageing phenomena including age-related diseases as oral and poster contributions. Submissions will be accepted electronically starting in April 2014. The submission deadline is July 31, 2014.

The workshop is organized by the Jena Centre for Systems Biology of Ageing - JenAge and supported by the Leibniz Institute for Age Research, Fritz Lipmann Institute - FLI.

Scientists have lost control of the publication process and eLife is an attempt to empower scientists to regain control over a process that is so fundamental to our daily work as well as our professional advancement.

eLife is a new journal, the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the funders and practitioners of life and biomedical science, aiming to catalyze fundamental change in research communication. Motivated by the tremendous opportunities afforded through digital media, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust have come together with the research community to create a new and transformative journal, as a first step in the broader eLife project. At this open house, Ian Baldwin will talk about the three legs of eLife's initial mission which are: to publish outstanding science under an open-access license; to create an unparalleled editorial process that is decisive, fair and efficient; and to fully utilize digital media in the presentation of new research. eLife started accepting manuscripts in the early summer and the first papers to be published are available at: http://www.elifesciences.org/the-journal/articles/

The official launch of the journal will be on Dec 11 and this will be an opportunity to get a preview of the next batch of accepted manuscripts.

Come join us for pizza and beer and an open discussion about the most important activity for all scientists: their scholarly communications.
