Natural products – Mediators of biological communication
Research at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI) – combines the study of novel microbial natural products with infection biology of human pathogenic fungi. Natural products are essential mediators of biological communication. Not only are they involved in the development of many infectious diseases, they also provide one of the most important sources for drugs, in particular antibiotics. At the Leibniz-HKI, we are interested in the communication between microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, as well as the interaction of pathogenic microorganisms – especially fungi – with their host. The aim is to develop a systems biology of infection and to create novel concepts in diagnosis and therapy.
