University Hospital Jena - Section of Experimental Virology, Institute of Medical Microbiology

The former "Institute for Virology and Antiviral Therapy" of the University Hospital Jena was incorporated into the "Institute for Medical Microbiology" as the "Section Experimental Virology" on January 1, 2017. It had been created in 2003 by a merger of the two Jena institutions "Institute of Virology" and "Institute for Antiviral Chemotherapy". In addition to student training, researchers are mainly concerned with the investigation of cell regulatory processes as a result of infection with various viral respiratory pathogens (e.g. influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial viruses, rhinoviruses and, more recently, SARS-CoV-2). A further focus lies on the molecular interplay between different respiratory pathogens and the host, which has been little researched so far, e.g. if an infection with bacteria or fungi is added to a viral infection. These investigations will contribute to a better understanding of complications in the course of infection and will be used to identify targets for new anti-pathogenic strategies.
