Despite the digital revolution, peer-reviewed articles in journals remain the key currency of research communication. Journal articles are the primary vehicle for the dissemination and consumption of new findings and ideas, as well as the means by which reputations and careers are built. But change is coming. eLife was launched by three funding agencies in 2012 to challenge some of the existing practices and to explore new ways to evaluate and present research. The eLife editorial process, for example, is collaborative and constructive and has gained a great deal of attention and support. Mark will discuss these and other developments at eLife and put them into the broader context of changes taking place within the world of scholarly communication.
