As director of Leyden Academy I promote a mindset change to accommodate the demographic revolution: not to focus on preventing people from dying but to facilitate vitality for the individual and our society.”

Rudi GJ Westendorp is an internationally renowned physician, researcher and bestselling author. He studied at the University of Leiden, and became an internist at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). Initially he worked in intensive care and later in the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology, which he headed for a number of years. Since 2000, he has been professor of medicine. In 2008, he founded the Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing. This knowledge centre provides education, conducts research and pursues innovations in the field of human ageing and vitality to advance the quality of life of older people.

Prof. Westendorp contributed to over 500 scientific publications, supervised over 40 PhD students in their successful promotion, and is extensively consulted and interviewed by media on his field of expertise.
