Conference_The Anthropocene: addressing its challenges for humanity – crossing the boundaries of science
The Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology, founded in 2022, and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina are organizing this conference as part of the inter- and transdisciplinary conference series "Crossing Boundaries in Science".
The conference will be the inaugural scientific conference of the still young institute and is dedicated to key questions of our research. The rapid and intense fashion, in which humanity is changing the very foundations on which our existence and well-being on this planet are resting, is starting to attain a magnitude that—according to the opinion of many—threatens to put the future of humanity on Earth in peril. In order to secure a livable habitat for us on our planet we have to rethink how humans gain understanding about these global changes, make decisions and act on them. These questions have to be dealt with adequately and rapidly in order to successfully meet the challenge of securing our sustainable future on Earth.
This is a multifaceted challenge, involving scientific, political, social, economic, psychological and ethical aspects. We invited researchers and scientists whose research deals with the human-made changes to the Earth system and the consequences and challenges they impose. The concept of the Anthropocene is at the center of this challenge.
The conference will feature three days of lectures and panels addressing different dimensions of this highly relevant theme:
What do we know and what knowledge is missing?
Who are the key actors addressing the challenges of the Anthropocene?
What are main leverage points?
The program will be finalised in the coming days, it will then be published soonest.
