„Ultrafast Photochemistry in the Origins of Life”

The first molecular building blocks of life, such as RNA, DNA, peptides, and lipids emerged on Earth over 3.5 billion years ago. Due to the absence of the ozone layer, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation as deep as 200 nm could penetrate to the surface of the early Earth and likely acted as an energy source to assemble the building blocks of life from simple feedstock molecules. This talk will give a broad interdisciplinary overview of the role of UV light for the origins of life on Earth or Earth-like exoplanets and summarize recent laboratory results by spectroscopic techniques such as ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy.
